Bosnia: Srebrenica Muslim refugees not given right to vote

The 'Mothers of Srebrenica' organization say that the city's Muslims will leave if the refugees won't be allowed to vote.

Six months from now, a municipal election will be held in this isolated mining town, the scene of the largest massacre in Europe since World War Two.

The town's current mayor, a 33 year-old Bosnian Muslim, says the election will hand Bosnian Serbs control of the town and complete the "ethnic cleansing," or removal, of all Muslims from eastern Bosnia. Serbs say it is democracy, plain and simple.

Seventeen years ago, Serb forces executed 8,100 Muslim men and boys here in the largest single mass killing of the war in Bosnia. The U.S. and its European allies - who had declared the town a U.N. protected "safe area" - stood by as the Serbs rampaged for days in the summer of 1995.

In local elections since then, a special exemption has been granted that allows Muslims who lived here before the war to vote in Srebrenica - even if they no longer reside here. This year, the country's High Representative - a foreign overseer with sweeping powers - plans to issue no such exemption. In a visit to the town this week, he called for Serb and Muslim politicians to compromise.

Many of the returnees have left again for lack of work and use their rebuilt houses as holiday homes, leaving only the elderly to sit out their old age on their native land.

What differentiates the BPNP from other European neo-Nazi groups is that it was founded by, and is intended for, Muslim Bosnians – as evident from its spheres of operation, which are listed on its website.

Each year millions of Muslims make the annual pilgrimage to the Saudi city of Mecca.

The Hajj, as it is known, is still far away, at the end of October, but 47-year-old Senad Hadzic has already set off in that direction.

That's because he is on foot.

He started from his hometown in northern Bosnia back in December 2011 and is walking all the way to Mecca — a distance of 3,600 miles. He covers between 12 to 20 miles a day.

“Leave Allah and his faith alone, or the hand of the believer will reach you!”

That was the message -- accompanied by a bullet -- that Emir Suljagic received in an envelope slipped into his mailbox earlier this month. Shortly thereafter, he resigned as education minister for Bosnia-Herzegovina's Sarajevo Canton. He has since left the country, reportedly for Austria, citing safety concerns.

Suljiagic is a survivor of the 1995 Srebrenica massacre in which 8,000 Muslim men and boys were killed by Serb paramilitaries. But recently he came under intense pressure from Bosnian Muslim hard-liners due to a ruling he made last year that children’s grades in primary school religion classes would no longer count as part of their final annual average grade.

He said the decision was meant to ensure fairness for children who chose not to take religion classes, which are optional in Bosnian schools. But it nevertheless set off a firestorm of criticism from Islamic clerics, including Mufti Mustafa Ceric, leader of Bosnia's Muslim community.

A prosecution witness in the trial of wartime Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic before the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia described in detail on Tuesday how he took part in the killing of over 1,000 Muslims in eastern town of Srebrenica in July 1995.

The witness, Drazen Erdemovic, a Croat who fought with Bosnian Serb forces during 1992-1995 war, said he and other seven Serb soldiers killed between 1,000 and 1,200 Muslims on a farm in the village of Pilica in mid-July 1995.

A prosecution witness in the trial of wartime Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic described on Wednesday before the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia what he called “deliberate killings” of thousands of Muslims in eastern Bosnia in July 1995.

Ending a three-day testimony, the witness, Momir Nikolic, said the killing of up to 8,000 Muslims in eastern town of Srebrenica in July 1995 was premeditated and planned by Bosnian Serb forces.

Bosnian Muslim spiritual leader Reiss Ul-Ulema Mustafa Ceric sparked outrage by calling for an Islamic awakening and denying that Muslim crimes against Serbs in 1992-1995 war ever occured. He also a Muslim awakening.

Preaching in a local mosque, Ceric protested the arrest of eight Muslims accused of torturing more than 600 Serbs in a detention camp “Silos” in the town of Hadzici near Sarajevo, 24 of who were killed.

“Wake up my people, and don’t wait until one by one is lead away and then we realize that we should have defended the rights of our brothers to preserve our own freedom and rights,” Ceric said.
